FAQs

General Questions

Common questions before choosing flooring, ordering samples or planning installation.

We generally recommend installing kitchen units first, then fitting the flooring around them. This helps avoid trapping the floor beneath heavy cabinetry and allows correct expansion gaps.

Homes & Floors does not currently provide in-house fitting, but we can recommend trusted independent installers and advise on product-specific fitting guidance.

Yes — samples can be ordered directly from our product pages. We recommend checking them in natural light before placing a full order.

Yes. As a guide, allow around 5–7% extra for straight plank layouts and 10–12% for herringbone or more complex cuts.

Measure length × width in metres to calculate square metres, then add your waste allowance. For irregular spaces, split the room into smaller sections first.

Often yes — especially with SPC, LVT or laminate over an existing hard surface, provided the subfloor is flat, dry and stable.

Products

Flooring Options

A cleaner overview of flooring types, installation systems and product compatibility.

SPC is a rigid-core vinyl flooring made from a stone-polymer composite, known for durability, stability and strong everyday performance.

LVT is a premium vinyl flooring designed to replicate wood or stone while offering a softer underfoot feel. It is available in click and glue-down options.

Laminate is a durable board-based flooring with a decorative surface layer, making it a practical option for bedrooms, living spaces and many everyday interiors.

Engineered wood combines a real wood top layer with a stable multi-layer core, giving the appearance of natural timber with improved dimensional stability.

Click flooring uses interlocking edges so boards can be joined without adhesive, allowing a quicker and cleaner installation in many spaces.

Glue-down flooring is fixed directly to the subfloor, creating a stable and secure finished result.

Many SPC floors include built-in underlay, but this varies by range. Always check the product specification before ordering.

SPC is typically more rigid and dent-resistant, while LVT is usually softer and more flexible. Both can offer excellent water resistance depending on the product.

Many ranges are compatible with underfloor heating, but this depends on the individual product and installation guidelines. Always check the manufacturer’s instructions.

Care

Cleaning & Maintenance

Simple care guidance to keep floors looking refined and lasting beautifully over time.

Sweep regularly and mop with a laminate-safe cleaner using only a lightly damp mop. Avoid excess water and steam unless the product specifically allows it.

Remove dust and grit often, then mop with a pH-neutral cleaner. Avoid harsh chemicals and abrasive products.

Use a wood-safe cleaner and a slightly damp mop only. Avoid over-wetting or allowing moisture to sit on the floor.

Yes — robot vacuums are suitable for many hard floors, provided rollers and wheels are kept clean and grit is not dragged across the surface.

Wipe spills quickly, use entrance mats, add felt pads under furniture and keep pet nails trimmed to help reduce wear.

Use doormats, remove grit frequently, lift rather than drag heavy furniture and fit felt glides where possible.

As a simple guide, sweep or vacuum weekly, mop as needed and deep-clean based on foot traffic, room type and material.

Use pH-neutral cleaners where appropriate and avoid bleach, abrasive products and excessive water unless the product specification clearly permits it.

Installation

Fitting Tutorials

Practical guidance before installation, with a focus on cleaner planning and better results.

Herringbone requires an accurate starting line, careful layout and a very level subfloor. Professional installation is often recommended.

Contact us before you begin and we’ll help you choose the right flooring type, installation method and prep approach for your project.

Many flooring products benefit from acclimatisation. As a guide, allow the material to rest in the room for 24–48 hours before fitting unless the manufacturer states otherwise.
